About
Ilmari Rönkä (b. 1995) is a Helsinki-based saxophonist, flutist, and composer, known for his warm, distinctive saxophone sound. In December 2024, he released his debut EP Dancing Petals, in collaboration with vibraphonist Mikko Antila.
Rönkä holds a master’s degree from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and has also studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.
He is a key member of the Joonas Tuuri Quartet and the cinematic jazz ensemble Njet Njet 9. Rönkä also regularly performs with the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra and plays with the Vesa Aaltonen Prog Band, led by the drummer of the legendary Finnish prog group Tasavallan Presidentti.
Rönkä has performed at renowned festivals including Pori Jazz, Jazzkaar, Torino Jazz Festival, Tampere Jazz Happening, and Helsinki Festival.
